Child Safety: Small Hazards, Big Harm
Children are naturally curious – it’s part of how they learn about the world. But that curiosity can put them at risk when everyday objects become hidden dangers. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is leading a fresh campaign to help parents and carers understand how small hazards can cause big harm.
Child Safety: Small Hazards, Big Harm
🔋 Button Batteries: Tiny But Deadly
Button batteries are found in everything from remote controls to musical greeting cards. If swallowed, they can burn through a child’s throat or stomach lining in just two hours. Always check that battery compartments are secure, store spares out of reach, and head straight to A&E if you suspect your child has swallowed one.
🧴 Cleaning & Beauty Products: Not What They Seem
Brightly coloured cleaning sprays, bubble baths, and beauty products can look like juice or sweets to a child. Keep all household and personal care products in their original packaging, locked away or on high shelves.
🧲 Small Objects & Magnets: Big Risks
Magnets, coins, beads, and small toy parts can cause choking or serious internal injuries if swallowed. High-powered magnets are especially dangerous because they can stick together inside the body. Keep small objects well out of reach and check toys regularly for loose parts.
Simple Steps, Big Protection
- Store batteries, chemicals, and small items high up or in locked cupboards
- Never transfer cleaning or beauty products into food or drink containers
- Check toys and gadgets regularly for safety
- Act fast – if you think your child has swallowed something dangerous, seek immediate medical help
By making a few small changes around the home, we can create safer spaces for children to explore, learn, and thrive. Let’s spread the word and keep our little ones safe.
